Why am I seeing a “You cannot use this password” error?
When attempting to register for a Bonfire account or resetting your password, you may encounter a message stating: “You cannot use this password.”
Why Am I Seeing This Error?
Bonfire is always updating security practices, including adding systems that help determine the strength of your password. If you see the above error, it is likely because the password you’re trying to use follows a pattern similar to that of a less secure password or may have been compromised.
To make your password stronger and to avoid the above error, we suggest the following best practices:
- Ensure your password is a minimum of 10 characters.
- Incorporate a mixture of the following: uppercase and lowercase letters, special characters, and numbers.
- Avoid reusing your password across multiple logins. If you have used your current password on a different application or website, please create a new one for Bonfire.
- Avoid using a series of the same characters (e.g., AAAAA, 12345, qwerty, etc.) or multiple repeated characters/patterns (e.g., 1234512345).
- Avoid using patterns on your keyboard (eg: qwertyuiop).
- Avoid using words with some letters simply replaced by numbers (e.g., a1rplan3 or aer0plan3).
- Avoid using popular words from television/movies or other popular media, or other common patterns like dates.
- Use a password manager to generate and store secure and complex passwords.
If you are still unable to set your desired password, please ensure your password has not been compromised. Bonfire currently will automatically reject any password that is known to have been compromised. You may check for publicly-known compromised passwords here: haveibeenpwned.com
PLEASE NOTE: Running this check does NOT mean that Bonfire has the authorization to view your password, or that your password has been sent to any external system for validation. No member of the Bonfire team has access to your password, and the tools and processes used during this time are simply to check the strength of the password used. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the Bonfire Support team.
